Description

This is a reentry program that promotes employment and income for former prisoners. The aim is to reduce recidivism as soon as they return to the community.
Participants must not have a history of violent crime, attempted escape, four or more convictions, and must be at least ten months into their custodial sentence.
The intervention is carried out in work release centers throughout the state, where participants are supervised and protected, as well as being subject to strict schedules for returning to the center after completing the workday. Failure to comply with the timetable and failure to show up for work can constitute an escape and result in a return to prison.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed that participants had a reduction in recidivism, as well as an increase in employment and income rates, three months after release from the prison system [1].
