This is a drug abuse prevention program for high-risk adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19 who are in institutional care.
It consists of four components:
1) Preventive education: held in eight group sessions (8-10 adolescents) to discuss the consequences of substance use, family problems, and stress;
2) Individual assessment: to determine the level of substance use, substance use in the family, and the need for additional services;
3) Group counseling: a series of 8 to 12 group counseling sessions divided by developmental differences, substance use patterns, and family history of substance use; and
4) Referral and consultation: counselors refer participants who need treatment assistance or more intensive counseling, or who wish to participate in 12-step groups (such as Alcoholics Anonymous) outside the facility.
