Description

This is a community-based prevention program for adolescents ages 14 to 16 who are at risk of being involved in abusive relationships. The objectives of the program are to increase awareness of the signs of an abusive relationship and to teach them how to develop healthy relationships.
Sessions of two hours each are conducted in small groups in a non-school community setting. Each session is guided by an intervention manual and coordinated by two co-facilitators (one male and one female) through interactive activities.
The intervention is delivered in three segments:
1) Education sessions on abusive relationships in a heterosexual couple;
2) Skill-building sessions on avoiding abusive situations and positive problem-solving strategies; and
3) Social action sessions to inform young people about community resources available to those who need care in cases of violence.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed a statistically significant reduction in the perpetration of physical abuse and trauma symptoms, as well as a reduced likelihood of emotional abuse and threatening behavior victimization for participants compared to those in the control group, who did not receive the intervention. However, there were no differences between groups in terms of displayingthreatening behaviors or hostility [1].
