Description

This is an outpatient program aimed at adult women from 26 to 55 years of age. It adopts a comprehensive approach, focusing on training in the cognitive and behavioral skills that help manage problematic behaviors, such as substance use and child neglect.
Treatment components include:
1) Contingency management to reinforce behavioral goals, using the family support system;
2) Communication skills training to improve family relationships;
3) Environmental restructuring to increase time with positive influences;
4) Self-monitoring methods to help prevent relapse;
5) Professional skills training;
6) Home safety and caregiving to create a safe and stimulating family environment;
7) Financial management training;
8) Child management and parenting skills training; and
9) HIV and sexually-transmitted disease prevention.
The program is conducted over six months, in 20 sessions lasting 75 minutes each, in the participant’s home.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation demonstrated the program’s effectiveness to reduce the abuse of alcohol and other drugs; improving mothers’ work attendance and children’s schooling, as well as family relationships; and reducing mothers’ depressive symptoms and children’s admission to child protection institutions [1].
