Description

This is a group mentoring program for young people between 16 and 24 years of age on probation. The objective is to reduce recidivism and strengthen the link with the community.
The program seeks to stimulate a positive attitude and behavioral changes through open groups, with a frequency of twice a week for six months. The groups are coordinated by tutors, who apply a journaling technique based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and youth development approaches.
The journals address topics such as aggression management and social-emotional and communication skills. Participants are referred to the program by the probation officers in charge of their cases.
A mentoring intervention with motivational interviewing is also implemented during the program.
Participants receive financial assistance in the amount of US$800, meals prior to group participation, and metro cards, in cases of good performance in the program.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed that, over a 24-month period, program participants experienced a statistically significant reduction in criminal recidivism. However, there were no statistically significant differences in overall arrests, criminal arrests, or recidivism [1].
