Description

This is a police unit for handling domestic violence cases in order to reduce future offenses through intensive investigation (e.g., conducting detailed follow-up interviews, identifying/correcting missing information in patrol reports, preparing case materials for the district attorney, etc.) and victim assistance (e.g., filing restraining orders).
As part of this effort, all domestic violence cases are referred to the sergeant of the specialized unit, who reviews the reports and decides whether the case should be returned to standard patrol or accepted into the domestic violence unit. The primary basis for this decision is the subjective assessment of the severity of the case.

Impact evaluations

The impact assessment showed that suspects processed through the domestic violence unit had significantly lower rates of recidivism associated with violence against women over a follow-up period of 18 to 30 months. The probability of recidivism was approximately 50% lower than that of offenders processed using standard police procedure [1].
