Description

This is a school mentoring program for children who show signs of disconnection from the school environment and are at risk of dropping out. The aim is to reduce the number of days students are absent from school and increase engagement in academic activities.
Risk assessment tools are used to screen out students who are suitable for the program, and these children are assigned mentors that are already part of the school team, having been previously trained and having access to the intervention manual.
The program is based on two components:
1) Checking, in which school attendance data and socio-behavioral skills and academic performance scores are analyzed;
2) Connection, in which mentors share with students strategies based on the analyzed data to stimulate an improvement in academic and social performance. Meetings between mentors and students occur for at least two years.

Impact evaluations

One impact evaluation showed that students in the program had fewer absences, more days at school, and better results in math assessments, but the results were not statistically significant [1]. A second study also found no statistically significant differences [2].
