This is a restorative justice program for domestic violence offenders. Restorative Justice Circles seek to provide reparations to the victim, the family, and the community.
The offender attends all the Circle of Peace sessions, accompanied by a facilitator trained in restorative justice (“guardian”). Tthere are often other participants in addition to the offender and the “guardian”, including a volunteer member of the community, the person providing support to the offender, and family members who have agreed to participate voluntarily.
The victim can also attend a few or more sessions, or none at all (and can also have a support person present in the Circle with them). Under the guidance of the guardian, Circle members focus on the impact of the crime committed and the desire, potential, and ability to change behavior in order to avoid similar events in the future.
In addition, participants discuss family histories of abuse, typical triggers of violence, and the ways in which issues such as social and economic status, cultural norms, racial oppression, and religious beliefs affect the dynamics of abuse.
