Description

This is a therapeutic follow-up program for children from 8 to 12 years of age with mental disorders and their primary caregivers, and it aimed at improving children’s behavior and family functioning.
The intervention lasts 12 weeks, with weekly meetings of three to four hours per session. The sessions are conducted in small groups led by tutors and involve discussions related to social problem-solving and social interaction skills previously chosen by the children. At the end of each meeting, tutors speak briefly with parents to discuss the child’s activities, behavior, and progress.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed that the program had positive effects on the resolution of social and behavioral problems, but did not have a favorable impact on measures of parental attachment and social skills among the children in the intervention group compared to the control group. The study followed a randomized experimental design with a sample of 86 families, of which 45 participated in the intervention and 41 were in the control group [1].
