Description

This is an electronic monitoring strategy for convicted offenders based on radio frequency or a Global Positioning System (GPS) that tracks the offender’s location.
The equipment consists of a tamper-resistant electronic anklet and a tracking device that transfers data directly to the monitoring center.

Impact evaluations

An impact assessment showed that electronic monitoring contributed to a reduction in sexual crimes, crimes against property, and drug trafficking, while improving convict supervision. It also reduced the risk of failure or inaccuracy when locating the offender by 31%, compared to other community-based monitoring strategies. GPS monitoring had fewer failures compared to radio frequency systems [1].
