Description

This is an education, vocational training, and employment program for individuals with substance use problems involved in the justice system. The goal is to provide employment and help retain employment among individuals without a history of violent crime who are willing to participate in the program.
The program involves three phases:
1) Obtaining employment and vocational training;
2) Job retention (training in on-the-job conflict resolution, goal setting, and personal organization);
3) Job upgrading (identification of potential employers and professional development).
The intervention offers weekly group sessions with motivational interviewing, reflection and discussion maps, as well as individual sessions for participants with special demands.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed that, in the last 30 days, there was a small improvement in substance use, but no statistically significant effect on the number of days worked in legitimate employment, legitimate earned income, property damage, or stolen goods activities [1].
