Description

This is a redirection program that monitors adults with substance use problems to reduce their involvement in crime.
Program requirements include:
1) Participation in weekly self-help groups;
2) Meetings with case managers and participation in individual and family counseling sessions;
3) Payment of fees;
4) Commitment to community service hours;
5) Submission of random urine tests each week; and
6) Weekly drug court participation.
Participants also receive food stamps, welfare services, shelter slots, mental health services, medical and dental services, and access to anger management and parenting skills development courses.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed that, over a three-year follow-up period, the program achieved a statistically significant reduction in overall and drug-related criminal recidivism, but no significant effect on drug abuse [1].
