Description

This is a program that incorporates contingency management and multisystemic therapy protocols into the traditional services provided by juvenile drug treatment courts, with the goal of providing youth and their families with additional opportunities for engagement, as well as support to reduce recidivism and substance use.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation found that drug court services were more effective than family court services to reduce the rates of adolescent substance use and delinquent behavior, possibly due to the much greater surveillance of youth in drug courts. However, these relative reductions in antisocial behavior did not translate into corresponding decreases in subsequent recidivism or incarceration. Furthermore, the findings support the view that the use of evidence-based treatment in the drug court setting improves substance-related outcomes for youth [1].
