Description

This is an integrated program for gangs focused on young people, their families, and the groups involved. The aim is to reduce crime and recidivism among young people who are socially vulnerable or involved in violent groups. To this end, the intervention includes five strategies:
1) Community mobilization;
2) Social intervention;
3) Offering social opportunities;
4) Social control;
5) Organizational development.
A team of police officers, probation supervisors, social workers, and social movement leaders offer intervention and social control services.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed an 18% reduction in arrest levels over a 4-year period and a 10.4% reduction in crime in the neighborhoods that received the program’s intervention. The study suggests that multifaceted cross-sector interventions involving both prevention and repression efforts are effective to reduce gang crime [1].
