Description

This is an intervention designed to increase and improve targeted patrolling based on information generated by automatic vehicle tracking in order to reduce crime and increase police effectiveness.
Police departments received the following weekly reports generated by the automated vehicle tracking: the amount of police resources directed to the selected hotspot in the previous week, how long each hot spot is patrolled for, and the time spent by officers on other emergency calls and activities outside the hot spots.
The reports were included in the weekly COMPSTAT meetings for analysis and discussion of the information, where adjustments were made in the instructions provided to police teams and in the selection of hot spots that required more attention.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed that patrol interventions in hot spots led to a 21% decrease in crime [1].
