Description

This is a program for parents and/or caregivers of children from zero to three years old aimed at promoting safe and healthy relationships between parents and their children.
The intervention is carried out through standardized home visits, which entail:
1) Videotaping the interactions between the caregiver and the child to provide information about real-life situations and help parents reflect on the child’s underlying needs and how these needs affect the child’s behavior;
2) Giving positive and instructive feedback that reinforces parents’ competence with their children and their commitment to them;
3) Focusing on the deeper emotional feelings and underlying needs of children’s suffering and behaviors; and
4) Utilizing printed materials and hands-on activities to improve parents’ perception and learning about children’s development, needs, and social and emotional concerns.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed that the program produced a statistically significant improvement in children’s affective communication, understanding, and sensitivity, and a reduction in the likelihood of children being taken into child protection institutions [1].
