Description

This is a parent training and family strengthening program for African American parents with teenage children. The aim is to improve parenting skills and the bonds between parents and children, so that adolescents develop healthily.
The program addresses racial discrimination, socioeconomic vulnerability, and family instability, consisting of training parental skills in communication, bonding and support, and preventing the use of psychoactive substances and antisocial behavior among young people by encouraging self-efficacy.
The program is implemented by a facilitator in the participants’ homes, in six parent-centered sessions.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed a statistically significant increase in the levels of parental supervision and positive self-concept, as well as a decrease in conduct problems and onset of psychoactive substance use. There was no significant effect on racial pride socialization [1].
