Description

This is a community court focused on problem-solving and crime prevention by addressing its contextual causes. The community court model aims to relocate justice away from large centralized courts to local community courts.
In doing so, the court is believed to be able not only to address the underlying causes of crime, but also to increase the community’s perception of procedural justice.
It functions as a multi-jurisdictional court, combining four components:
1) A criminal court, which handles adult contravention cases;
2) A citation part, which deals with minor violations of the law;
3) A family court, which tries juvenile delinquency cases;
4) A court that handles disputes between tenants and landlords.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed that, after two years, program participants had a 36% recidivism rate versus 40% in the control group, this difference being statistically significant [1].
