Description

These are specialized units within the Brazilian Investigative Police (Civil Police), which carry out actions to prevent, protect, and investigate crimes of domestic violence and sexual violence against women.
Actions include filing a police report, requesting urgent protection measures to the judge in cases of domestic and family violence against women, and investigating the crimes.

Impact evaluations

A study conducted in 2022 confirmed that the presence of women’s police stations is associated with a reduction in female homicides. However, the study suggests that although the presence of police stations substantially affects the dynamics of gender-based violence, it does not homogeneously protect vulnerable groups. This is due to the fact that the effects of the presence of women’s police stations were greater in terms of reducing homicides committed against women identified as white compared to women identified as African Brazilian [1].
The study specifically showed that to reduce homicides of women who identify as African Brazilians, women’s police stations are not effective without supplementary policies, both educational and infrastructural.
This study used a difference-in-differences method based on the enforcement of the Maria da Penha Law as a time variation.
It compared municipalities that already had women’s police stations on that date with municipalities that did not yet have them.
