Description

The Stepping Stones and Creating Futures (SSCF) program consists of a structured intervention that works with both women and men, and it is based on the assumption that the perpetration of intimate partner violence (by men) is associated with gender inequality and poverty.
The program has two components:
1) Stepping Stones (South African version), which involves a 10-session participatory curriculum on HIV and violence prevention delivered to single-sex groups by trained peers.
2) Participants then followed an 11-session curriculum known as Creating Futures, designed to improve livelihoods.
Stepping Stones focuses on concepts such as gender, violence, and sexual and reproductive health while Creating Futures is based on managing finances, finding employment, and creating sustainable livelihoods. The program works to reduce intimate partner violence individually and in relationships through awareness, training, and changing harmful social norms.

Impact evaluations

A Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) found evidence that program effects vary according to the sex of the beneficiary. Significant reductions in physical violence (reported by men) against their partners were observed, as well as promising evidence regarding sexual violence (against a partner or not). However, for women, no reductions in experiencing episodes of partner violence were found, despite the benefits and gains in economic terms [1].
