Strengthening Families Program
Description

This is a parenting skills training program aimed at families with members who abuse psychoactive substances.
The sessions are divided into three groups, as follows:
1) Parenting skills sessions to improve attachment between parents and children through play, development of a reward system, clear communication, effective discipline, substance use education, and problem-solving;
2) Life skills sessions for children, such as developing behavioral and emotional control, effective communication, improving social and problem-solving skills, resisting peer/friend pressure, understanding the consequences of substance use, and complying with parental standards;
3) Family life skills sessions allow parents and children to practice what they have learned in their individual sessions through experiential exercises, such as therapeutic children’s games, family meetings, and planning family activities together.

Impact evaluations

Impact evaluation studies showed that the program produced significant results on conduct disorders, oppositional defiant disorder, and other problematic behaviors [1], and improved families’ involvement in activities that contribute to their children’s well-being [2].
However, another study found no significant impact on child behavioral problems, risk and protective factors, family factors, or negative peer associations [3].
