Joana Monteiro is an economist (UFRJ), PhD in Economics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) and a specialist in public policy evaluation. Joana has extensive experience in the field of using rigorous scientific methods that combine intensive use of data, analytical rigor and specialized knowledge to produce applied research, oriented to the evaluation of programs in both crime prevention and control.
Currently, she is the coordinator of the Center of Applied Sciences for Public Security of the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (CCAS /FGV), a space of excellence in the study and evaluation of the impact of governmental actions in the area of public security. She has also been director-president of the Institute of Public Security of Rio de Janeiro (ISP-RJ), a state government agency responsible for the dissemination and analysis of crime and violence statistics.
In this video, Joana Monteiro explains the basic concepts and elucidates the processes used in impact evaluation research in the area of public safety, including both randomized controlled experiments (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies.
