Description

Vehicle Ignition Interlocks are court-ordered pieces of equipment installed in the vehicles of people who have previously been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The equipment requires the driver to take the breathalyzer test several times in order to start the car. The data is recorded in tamper-proof devices that must be presented periodically to the court.

Evidence

A systematic review identified six studies that evaluated the impact of the use of Vehicle Ignition Interlock devices. This type of mechanism produced a 15% to 69% reduction in drunk-driving recurrence [1].
The Crime Reduction Toolkit platform rated the strategy as highly effective to reduce alcohol-related traffic violations [2]. This effect remains even after uninstalling the device [1][3].
