The Companhia Integrada de Policiamento de Proximidade (Integrated Proximity Police Organization) was a program implemented in the 6th Military Police Battalion of Rio de Janeiro to complement the Police Pacification Units (“UPPs”, focused on favelas and conflictive communities), with particular emphasis on middle and upper-class neighborhoods. The program covered a total of 40 territories and involved 120 police officers, 102 of whom were newly recruited. The officers participated in a three-week training course. Each pair of officers, identified by a reflective vest with a red X, conducted foot patrols, visited businesses, daycare centers, and schools, and approached residents. The program provided for 8-hour daily patrols from Monday to Friday.
