Description

This is a multicomponent program for the monitoring of adolescents from 11 to 17 years of age with problems associated with drug abuse or with a history of involvement in juvenile courts and psychiatric hospitalization. The objective is to provide the necessary information for the management of stressors and to contribute to a more positive family relationship.
The intervention has three main stages:
1) Assessment and formulation of a treatment plan;
2) Implementation of basic individual and family interventions; and
3) Closure and relapse prevention.
Individual and family sessions incorporate psychoeducational modules that address a variety of topics, including sexual risk behaviors, depression, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and family risk factors. If necessary, the therapist may conduct home visits, school, court, and other institutions important to the adolescent.

Impact evaluations

Impact evaluations showed that the program was effective to reduce cannabis and cocaine use and associated disorders, anxiety symptoms, behavioral and disruptive disorders, and aggression, and that it produced family cohesion and improved parenting patterns. However, it had no effect on problems associated with depression and internalizing behavior [1] [2].
