Description

This is a problem-oriented policing and targeted patrolling program to reduce crime in areas with high crime rates by reorienting police resources based on geographic data.
Problem-oriented policing involves the articulation of police teams to solve tracked community problems, applying situational crime prevention strategies and making arrests and detentions in high-crime locations. Problem-oriented patrolling consists of preventing crime by “saturating” high-crime areas with a strong police presence in long-term patrols.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation revealed that while the program contributed to a statistically significant reduction in reports of non-domestic violence at the hot spots that received the intervention, there was no statistically significant effect on reports of any type of violence or property crime [1].
