Description

This is an intervention aimed at developing social and emotional competence in the classroom among adolescents.
It is developed through four components:
1) Calming the mind by listening to a resonating instrument (chime) and concentrating on breathing;
2) Mindfulness of thoughts and feelings;
3) Managing negative emotions and negative thinking;
4) Recognizing oneself and others.
Each part of the program builds on previous lessons and skills, leading students to focus on subjective experiences based on the senses and on cognitive experiences. In addition, the lessons involve community service actions.

Impact evaluations

Impact evaluation studies have shown that participants in the program showed significant increases in social and emotional competence, empathy, and perspective-taking; and decreases in aggressive and oppositional behavior [1].
One of the studies used a quasi-experimental design [1], while the other utilized a Randomized Controlled Trial [2].
