Description

This is a universal prevention program applied throughout the school with the aim of reducing the behavioral problems that lead to the suspension of students, as well as of changing the perception of school safety.
The components of the intervention are:
1) The school puts together a team that includes six to ten members and an administrator, who train and meet twice a month to discuss school-wide behavior management systems and procedures;
2) An external behavior support coach provides consulting and technical assistance at the school;
3) Expected student behaviors are defined using positive language;
4) Behavior expectations are taught to all students using lesson plans developed by the school staff;
5) A system is developed and used consistently throughout the school to reward students who behave appropriately;
6) Everyone in the school is informed about which types of behavior are inappropriate in the school environment and which lead to disciplinary referrals to the school board.

Impact evaluations

Impact evaluation studies have shown that students participating in the program had significantly fewer suspensions from school. There was also an improvement in the perception of safety in schools that implemented the program, but a decrease in schools that did not implement it [1] [2].
