Description

This is a two-year reinforcement program that teaches a broad spectrum of social and personal competence skills to help young people identify and resist social pressures from their peers and others to smoke, drink, and participate in sexual activities.
The program reinforces the skills and knowledge learned in 12 sessions:
1) Access to drugs;
2) Decision-making;
3) Advertising;
4) Self-image and self-improvement;
5) Dealing with change;
6) Dealing with stress;
7) Communication skills;
8) Social skills: meeting and greeting people;
9) Social skills: relationships with colleagues;
10) Assertiveness;
11) Relationships;
12) Life planning skills.
SMART program leaders encourage participants to stay involved in prevention activities and to be positive, drug-free role models for their peers. There is also the possibility of doing a program booster after two years.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed that program participants reported less drug abuse and reluctant smoking behavior, and more knowledge about drug abuse. Only the Stay SMART + Reinforcements group showed a reduction in alcohol-related behavior [1].
The study had an experimental design with a follow-up of 27 months, with a sample of 377 adolescents: 129 in Stay SMART only, 121 in Stay SMART + Reinforcements, and 127 in the control group [1].
