Description

This is a program aimed at intensively monitoring drivers with a history of conviction for crimes associated with drinking and driving. The objective is to reduce recidivism and encourage abstinence.
The following intensive tests are applied, among others:
1) Breathalyzer tests, twice a day;
2) Anklets that monitor alcohol consumption;
3) Ignition interlock devices;
4) Urine testing.
Failure to comply with the tests or substance-impaired results may result in an arrest warrant or revocation of probation.

Impact evaluations

An impact evaluation showed that the program led to a significant reduction in recidivism into drunk driving and domestic violence arrests, but had no effect on the number of arrests for first-time drunk driving or traffic crashes [1].
