Description

These programs work directly with groups of couples in sessions mediated by facilitators and focused on gender transformation strategies. The aim is to promote a critical reflection on gender-related attitudes and conflict-generating factors. The sessions can be separated by gender or can be mixed, and also aim to develop communication skills for a healthy relationship.
Interventions with couples consist of: 1) intensive group activities aimed at the general population and focused on gender equality and the development of relationship skills through participatory methods; 2) brief interventions aimed at couples identified through clinical assessments and focused on the development of healthy behaviors that include discussions about gender relations; and 3) couple therapy sessions.

Evidence

A systematic review included ten experimental or quasi-experimental studies. Of these, six showed positive impacts on intimate partner violence; one study found promising results; and three reviews found no impact. It should be noted that these ten evaluations covered short-, medium-, and long-term programs, with some programs including two therapy sessions and others up to 40 sessions. [1]
A systematic review and meta-analysis of six experimental studies on interventions with couples carried out in the United States included 470 participants and also indicated that couple therapy sessions significantly reduce intimate partner violence. Three of the programs included use methodologies of 1:1 behavioral therapy sessions for couples; one program offers 1:1 or group sessions focused on developing healthy relationships; another offers 1:1 therapy sessions focused on domestic violence; and a final one works on aggressive behaviors in group sessions with couples.
