DUI Treatment Court

DUI Treatment Courts attempt to replicate the successful experience of drug treatment courts by facilitating access to alcohol education and treatment services for offenders, and allow for the suspension of criminal proceedings as long as the defendant demonstrates progress in the treatment process.

Automobile Ignition Interlocks

Vehicle Ignition Interlocks are court-ordered pieces of equipment installed in the vehicles of people who have previously been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The equipment requires the driver to take the breathalyzer test several times in order to start the car. The data is recorded in tamper-proof devices that must be presented periodically to the court.

Youth Drug Treatment Court

Youth/adolescent drug treatment courts are specialized courts for criminal cases involving this portion of the population, in which drug abuse by the defendant may be a relevant factor in the analysis of criminal conduct. It allows for the suspension of criminal proceedings, as the adolescent agrees to initiate and remain in drug abuse treatment, and may, in some cases, terminate criminal proceedings if the young individual demonstrates complete rehabilitation.

Public Lighting

Poor lighting enhances the surprise factor of a criminal action, makes it difficult to identify offenders, and favors the abandonment of streets and public spaces. Therefore, public lighting is one of the good situational and urban interventions presented by a large majority of studies that evaluate its impact on crime.

Cognitive Behavioral Intervention in Children and Adolescents

Cognitive behavioral interventions basically consist of a problem-centered approach that seeks to help people identify and change dysfunctional beliefs, thoughts, and patterns that contribute to the incidence of problematic (antisocial, risky, and delinquent) behavior in children and adolescents.
Cognitive behavioral interventions emphasize, above all, the functional analysis of behavior and its relationship with cognitions, focusing in particular on patterns of interpretation of social situations and decision-making processes adopted by young people.

Adult Drug Treatment Court

These are courts that combine drug treatment with the court’s legal and moral authority in an effort to break the cycle of drug abuse and drug- or alcohol-related crime. They generally work in partnership with mental health and other social services with the goal of preventing people in those situations from entering the Criminal Justice System (courts and jails) and aggravating their criminal trajectory. Currently, there are drug treatment courts in several different countries: for example, the United States, South Africa, Bermuda, Jamaica, and Chile.

Problem-Oriented Policing

Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) is a methodology that reorients the focus of police work toward problem-solving, rather than the traditional model of “reacting and responding to isolated incidents” [1]. POP is a proactive model that seeks to coordinate very specific responses to recurring problems by means of a thorough analysis of the causes that lead to the recurrence of those problems and the search for, implementation, and evaluation of effective solutions.
