Clarke County (Ga.) Victim Impact Panels

This is a restorative justice program for offenders convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol. The objective is to raise participants’ awareness of the consequences of their criminal act through contact with victims.
During the panels, offenders listen to the victims and understand the pain and loss they suffered due to a drunk driver. Failure to attend a session is the same as violating probation and therefore results in a new, jailable hearing.

San Diego Drug Abatement Response Team (DART)

This is a program aimed at reducing drug trafficking in rented residences by promoting better property management practices.
It articulates inspection actions to pressure landlords to address problems associated with drug trafficking in their tenants’ residences. Actions include different approaches, such as search and seizure warrants, permission for police to search the premises for drugs, purchase of substances by an undercover officer, arrest of the dealer, and probation violation orders.

Specialized Multi-Agency Response Team (SMART)

This is a program to reduce drug trafficking and improve housing conditions in the monitored areas. In each area, the police meets with parties interested in solving the problem, such as community representatives, tenants, and local merchants.
The police suggests simple crime prevention measures and explains tenants’ rights and responsibilities if the premises are found to be used for the sale of drugs or to disturb the peace.

Multi-Jurisdictional Law Enforcement Response to Increased Motor Vehicle Thefts in Downtown Areas

This is a police task force that uses spatial and temporal analysis to combat vehicle theft in downtown areas. The police strategy consists of blocking escape routes in areas with a high rate of vehicle theft with police cars and locating targets, looking for clusters of stolen cars. This blocking strategy avoids high-speed traffic chases and prevents suspects from escaping.

Tactical Police Responses to Micro-Time Hot Spots for Thefts from Vehicles and Residential Burglaries (Port St. Lucie, Florida)

This is a police intervention focused on vehicle thefts in “micro- time” hot spots. The definition of hot spots took into consideration areas where two vehicle thefts occurred within a maximum 14-day interval inside a given distance radius.
Police officers applied targeted patrol strategies and contact with potential victims and offenders during the 14 days after the events were recorded. Analysts tracked criminal activity at hot spots and updated reports until the area was crime-free for a continuous 21-day period.

Impact of Daylight Saving Time on Crime in Santiago

This is a public policy based on Decree No. 1489, which determines the application of annual daylight saving time in Chile. The time zone is adjusted so that the time of daylight coincides with a greater proportion of time dedicated to work and school activities. This way, it is intended to facilitate the routine activities of the population and generate savings in energy consumption.

Kirkholt Burglary Prevention Project (England)

This is a community prevention program to reduce residential burglary rates in the community.
It was developed in two phases:
1) The first corresponds to the articulation of a set of actions to establish the connection between repeat victimization and crime prevention, removal of barriers to improve natural surveillance, and improvement of physical security aspects.
2) The second seeks to reduce the motivation to offend, focusing on the offender.

Alley-Gating in Liverpool

This is a program that consists of installing high-strength security gates and doors at the access points to alleys or passages with the aim of reducing crime in common spaces within residential areas. The initiative allows access only to local residents, who operate with a copy of the access key.
