Security & Justice Evidence-Based Platform Launching

On April 18, the launch of the Security & Justice Evidence-Based Platform was held at IDB headquarters in Washington DC. The event was an opportunity for the IDB team to present the objectives and ambitions of the Platform, as well as the challenges and opportunities ahead. In addition, two keynote presentations and two city cases served to showcase the potential of evidence-based security and justice policies.

3rd International Congress of the Chilean Society of Criminology to be held July 26-28

The Chilean Society of Criminology (SoChiCrim) was born in 2019 with the aim of mobilizing networks of Chilean and foreign criminologists. Indeed, the organization has already held two international congresses in Chile (in july and december 2021), which were used to promote debates on the results of research, preferably empirical.

New study reviews and synthesizes the evidence on abusive use of force

The Safe City Institute, partner of IDB in the process of surveying and reviewing references for structuring the Evidence Bank,  launched, in December 2022, a study focused on reviewing worldwide scientific evidence on what works and what doesn't work to reduce police abuse of force, lethality

Criminal theories have emphasized the importance of the correction systems to deter individuals from becoming involved in crime, as well as to "re-educate" or "re-socialize" subjects who are subjected to restrictive or custodial measures.

Joana Monteiro is an economist (UFRJ), PhD in Economics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) and a specialist in public policy evaluation. Joana has extensive experience in the field of using rigorous scientific methods that combine intensive use of data, analytical rigor and specialized knowledge to produce applied research, oriented to the evaluation of programs in both crime prevention and control.

Bráulio Figueiredo Alves da Silva is a social scientist, graduated from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), where he also did his master's and doctorate in Sociology. He also works as a researcher at the Center for the Study of Criminality and Public Safety (CRISP/UFMG), which is a reference space in Brazil for the analysis and development of initiatives focused on the study of violence and criminality.

Barbara Caballero is an economist, graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), with a master's degree in Economics (PUC-Rio) and holds the position of coordinator of the Citizen Security Observatory (OSC), of the Jones dos Santos Neves Institute (IJSN), an entity associated with the government of the state of Espírito Santo (Brazil).
